HISTORY
Since opening our doors in 1987, Hands-on
House has been committed to serving children ages 2-10 though hands-on
exhibits and programs and to creating an intimate, family-friendly
atmosphere appropriate for the learning needs of young children and
families.
Hands-on House was originally located in the Pierce Landis House, an historic Victorian farmhouse. In February 2000, the museum moved to a new, bigger home on the campus of Landis Valley Museum—right across the street from the old building. This was the realization of a long-range goal for Hands-on House. This brand new facility was designed and built specifically to meet the needs of the children’s museum. The new facility is a 7,300 square foot one-story structure that more than doubles the size of the old facility. 3,100 square feet of the building house the museum’s exhibits.
This new facility was constructed as part of a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania building project at Landis Valley Museum, a state historic site operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. This building project not only provided a new home for the children’s museum, it also included a separate new collection storage facility for historic objects at Landis Valley Museum. Funding for the joint building project came primarily from state government allocations and from local community funds raised by Landis Valley Associates and Hands-on House.
