What is the Hands-on House At Your House Race Challenge?

The Hands-on House At Your House Race Challenge is a virtual event allowing participants to complete a half marathon, 10K, or 5K at any time from July 1 through July 31, 2020. Choose the distance that you would like to complete and simply run or walk that distance sometime in July. You don’t have to complete the distance all at once! Would you like to cover 13.1 miles but not all at once? Go for it! You are welcome to participate by splitting up the distance over several days or weeks!

Who can participate?

You! As well as your family, friends, neighbors … and your former college roommate who lives across the country! Virtual events are great because they can be completed anytime and anywhere. Whether you are an early bird or a night owl, a seasoned athlete or a casual walker, you can participate in the Hands-on House At Your House Race Challenge!  We will have youth sizes for shirts available, too, and there is $5 discount for kids 12 and under, so you can make it a family affair if you wish!

Where and when is the challenge?

The clock starts at 12:00AM on Wednesday, July 1 and doesn’t stop until 11:59PM on Friday, July 31. It is similar to a traditional race, but you choose the location and time that works for you!

Bonus: no race-day weather stress. If the forecast looks bad, run/walk it another day! Getting out of town for a few days? Take our challenge on the road. We’d love to see where you’re covering the miles!

Is this a timed event? Can I win an age group award?

This is not an officially timed event. You are welcome to track the time it takes you to complete your challenge and we would love to hear about your “race”! Log your challenge experience and results here. (Get a bonus raffle entry for reporting your results!) Due to the nature of the event, we will not be offering age group awards this year.

Why should I participate?

Quite simply, we need your help. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Hands-on House Children’s Museum will remain closed until it is safe for our staff, guests, and community to open. Unfortunately, several months of closed doors and canceled programs has meant a significant loss in crucial revenue.  Our annual race is the largest fundraiser for Hands-on House, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  We need the community’s help to sustain Hands-on House during this crisis and ensure that our doors can once again open for children and families to learn, play and create lifelong memories here together. This virtual event is one way you can support the Museum.

During our “stay at home” months, many of us began walking or running… or walking and running more! And in our neighborhood streets and on our local roads, many of us found a stronger sense of community even as we kept our social distance. Celebrate the positive sides of a challenging time by participating in this event!

What is the registration fee for the virtual event?

The registration fee for the Hands-on House at Your House Race Challenge is $30 ($25 for kids 12 and under). You can register through July 31, 2020 … and you have until July 31, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. to complete your challenge distance!

What does my registration fee include?

An awesome shirt, raffle prize drawing, and a sense of community while supporting Hands-on House and the children and families we serve!

Following the event, participants will receive their commemorative shirt  — our long-sleeve tech tee! — with our special edition Hands-on House At Your House Challenge logo.  We will be offering a curbside/social distance pick-up for shirts. (There will be an option during registration to have your shirt mailed for a small fee.)

Registrants will automatically be entered into a raffle drawing for prizes. More information on these fun prizes coming soon.  Look for email updates and info on our race Facebook page.

What do I do once I've completed my race?
  • Submit your race “results” here.
  • Share on social media! Post a photo (or three or four) of your challenge: the course, your fans, and/or a “sweaty selfie” finish line photo! Are you a Strava* user?  Use the share feature to post your activity!  Be sure to tag us on Facebook @handsonhouserace and Instagram @handsonhouse and use the hashtag #HOHVirtualRace
